Start without a website

No website yet? Tell us about your business and we'll draft your first site for you. You get a free preview to look around before you pay anything, and there's no setup fee.

  1. Go to Get your new site. You can also choose Not yet on Convert my site.
  2. Add your business name, a few sentences under What does your business do?, and your town. Have a business plan? Choose Add your business plan first and we fill in what we can (see Start from your business plan). Click Continue after each step, or Back to change an earlier one. There are 7 steps.
  3. We suggest what to build: the kind of business you are, the pages for your site, a few ideas, any add-ons you'd use, and a few questions only your kind of business needs. If we got the kind of business wrong, choose Change.
  4. Under Pages for your site, tick the pages you want, up to 7. Every site also gets a home page, a privacy policy and an accessibility statement. Missing a page? Type its name, like Catering, and choose Add. Then untick any idea you don't want.
  5. Under Add-ons, we tick the paid features we think your business would use, like bookings for a salon or signed waivers for a gym, each with its price. Untick any you don't want, or open Other add-ons for the rest. What it would cost once you launch shows your monthly price on the yearly and month-to-month plans. When the add-ons you picked cost more on their own than Business, it shows the price with Business instead. Waiver and release pages are signed on the page, so picking one ticks Signed forms and waivers. See Add-ons and The Business plan.
  6. Under A few questions to make it yours, answer the ones you can.
  7. Add your contact details and answer the questions for your kind of business, like the services you offer and your opening hours. Your street address, phone and email are optional: leave the street address empty if customers don't come to you. Skip anything you'd rather not answer.
  8. Add photos if you have them: your logo, your work, your space. Restaurants and cafés can add a photo or PDF of each menu. No photos yet? Click Skip for now.
  9. Tell us anything else that would help. All of it is optional, but the more we know, the better your first draft:
    • Anything else we should know? What customers love about you, what to highlight, how you'd like to come across, or anything to leave out.
    • Files about your business: a business plan, brochure, flyer, price sheet, business card or brand guide, as a PDF, a Word file or a photo, up to 4. We read them to write your pages; they don't go on your site.
    • Pages about your business: up to 3 links, like your Facebook page, your Google or Yelp listing, or an article about you.
  10. Pick a look. Our picks for your business come first; choose See all … designs for the rest.
  11. Type your email and choose Get my free preview.

It usually takes about 10 minutes. Click Watch it being built, or close the page: we email you a link when your preview is ready. If you close the page partway through, your answers are still there when you come back on the same device, but you'll need to add your photos and files again.

Start from your business plan

Already wrote a business plan? It can answer most of our questions for you.

  1. On the first step of Get your new site, choose Add your business plan and pick the file: a PDF or a Word file (.docx), up to 4 MB.
  2. Reading it takes a minute or two. You can keep typing while you wait. Changed your mind? Choose Cancel.
  3. Under Filled in from your business plan, we say what we filled in: your business name, what you do, your address and so on. We only fill in what's still empty, so anything you already typed stays.
  4. On the next steps, answers from your plan, like your services, the towns you serve or your hours, say From your business plan, so check it. Plans change, so fix anything that's out of date.

Your plan also goes with your other Files about your business, so we read all of it when we draft your site. We only use what customers could be told, like your services, prices, story and the area you serve. We leave out the money, the forecasts, the research on competitors and your goals: none of that goes on your site. Choose Don't use it to stop using the plan; what it filled in stays for you to change.

Start from your Square account

If you sell or take bookings with Square, connect your Square account and we fill in most of the first step for you. This is also the way in for a website on Square Online: Square shows a security check to programs like ours, so we can't copy those sites.

  1. On the first step of Get your new site, choose Connect Square. (On Convert my site, typing a Square Online address shows the same button.)
  2. Sign in to Square and allow access. We only ask to read your business details, items and services, and booking settings.
  3. You come back to the first step with your business name, description, address, phone, email and hours filled in. If you have more than one location, choose the one this site is for under Which location is this site for?
  4. Under Filled in from your Square account, untick anything you don't want in your draft: your services and prices, your photos from Square, your team's names and bios, or your Square booking page. Check what we filled in, then carry on as usual.

What we do with it:

  • Your services and prices become price lists on your site, exactly as Square has them, grouped as in Square.
  • Your photos from Square go where they fit, like your own photos. If you don't add a logo, we use the one from your Square account.
  • Your booking page: the Book buttons on your site open your Square booking page. See Connect a booking calendar.
  • Your Facebook and Instagram links go in your site's footer.

We read your Square account once, while you wait, and then give up our access straight away: we can't see anything you change in Square later. Changed your mind on the first step? Choose Don't use Square. What we read is deleted when you send your answers, or after a day if you don't.

What we write

  • Your pages. A home page and the pages you picked. We suggest the ones your kind of business usually needs, like services and a quote form for trades, prices and booking for salons, or a menu and visiting details for restaurants, plus pages made for your business.
  • Your words. We write about your services in plain language and use your own words wherever you gave them.
  • Your details. Your phone, address and hours appear exactly as you typed them.
  • The ideas you kept. Like a list of where your food truck parks this week, or before-and-after photos of your work.
  • What you sent us. Facts from your files (your business plan too) and the pages you linked to, like your story, services and prices, and reviews copied word for word from your listings. Your own Facebook, Instagram or Google link goes in your site's footer. Social media pages often ask us to log in, so we can't always read them; if we couldn't read a file or page, your preview email says so.
  • Your photos and menus. Your photos go where they fit best. If a photo doesn't seem to show your business, like a screenshot or a picture with someone else's logo, we leave it out and tell you so in your preview email. Menus become price lists with your items and prices, which you can change anytime. Where we don't have a photo, like a card for a service you didn't photograph, we may use one of our drawings instead, in your site's colors.

What we never do

We don't make anything up. We won't invent reviews, prices, awards or how long you've been in business. If something would need a fact you didn't give us, we leave it out, and the email with your preview link suggests what's worth adding, like a few reviews from happy customers.

Check your preview

Open the link in the email. The first time, a window lists things to try; click Start looking. To see it again, click ? next to Free preview at the top.

Click around, just as a customer would. Check your phone number, hours and prices, and that each photo suits its section. Forms in the preview don't send anything, so you can try them safely. To see it on a phone or tablet, click the computer, tablet and phone buttons in the bar at the top.

Try another design

  1. In the bar at the top, click Design: and the name of the current design (on a phone, just Design).
  2. Click a design in the row that opens. The one you picked comes first, marked Picked for you. Your words, photos and pages stay the same.
  3. Click Done to close the row.

Trying a design only changes what you see here. Your site launches with the design you picked, and you can switch any time after launch in Theme. See Pick a design.

Try the editor

  1. Click Try the editor in the bar at the top (Editor on a phone). A practice editor opens in a new tab, with your preview in it.
  2. Change words, photos and colors, and watch the preview update.
  3. When you're done, click Back to the preview or Launch this site at the top.

Nothing you change there is saved to your site, and publishing is turned off. Start over at the end of the left menu puts everything back as we made it.

Launch it

If you like it, choose Launch this site at the top of the preview, sign in with the email the preview was sent to, and pick your plan. The add-ons you picked are already ticked, with Business if it costs less, and you can change them before you pay. See Plans, billing and credits. We set up your site, and you can change every word, photo and color yourself afterward. See Getting started with the editor.

Still stuck?

Try it on the live demo first; nothing you do there is saved. If you’d rather have a person do it, ask for a work request from your dashboard. You’ll get a quote before any work starts.
